What Kids Learned
Building Friendly, Helpful AI
In Session 1, we broke down AI into simple, exciting ideas that kids can spot in the real world.
- What is AI? Smart computer programs that learn patterns (like recognizing voices or photos).
- How AI helps people 🧠🤖: From reading to the visually impaired to organizing community resources.
- Responsible AI superheroes: Ask “Is this kind? Is this fair? Does it keep people safe?”
- Hands-on sneak peek: Trying prompts, spotting patterns, and thinking about good data.
Hands-On Practice
Try the AI Superhero Moves at Home
From the practice guide, kids played with simple activities to feel how AI thinks.
- Spot the pattern: Sort objects by size or color, then explain the “rule” to a friend—just like training data.
- Yes/No classifier: Choose a superhero mission (e.g., “save noisy pets”), then decide which sounds fit the mission.
- Better prompts: Give clear, kind instructions to an imaginary robot and see how results improve.
- Fairness check: Ask, “Who might feel left out?” and adjust your rule so everyone is included.
Challenge: teach a family member one activity and invent a new “mission rule” together. 🦸
